New holographic materials have been developed for use in optical devices for storage and processing. This article reports the results of an extended research carried out on the preparation and optical characterization of new polymeric compounds suitable for holographic patterns, in which periodic one - dimensional and two - dimensional structures have been registered and investigated.

This innovation has the potential to provide petabyte-sized mass storage on DVD-size (120mm) discs. Data recording and reading are performed by focusing the lasers into the medium. However, because of the volumetric nature of the data structure, the laser light must travel through other data points before it reaches the point at which it is desired to read or record. Therefore, some kind of non-linearity is required to ensure that these other data points do not interfere with the addressing of the desired point.

No commercial product based on optical 3D data storage has hit the mass market, although several companies are actively developing the technology and claim that it may be available soon.

The advancement of nanophotonics has provided a variety of avenues for light-matter interaction on the nanometer scale through enriched mechanisms for physical and chemical reactions induced by confined nanometer optical probes in nanocomposite materials. These emerging nanophotonic devices and materials have enabled researchers to develop disruptive methods to greatly increase the storage capacity of the current optical memory. In this article, we present a review of recent advances in nanophotonics-enabled optical storage techniques. In particular, we offer our perspective of using them as optical storage arrays for next-generation exabyte data centers.
