GSM SERVICES AND PROTOCOLS
WHAT IS GSM??
1) GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is the most popular standard for mobile telephony systems in the world.
2) GSM is used by over 1.5 billion people across more than 212 countries . 3)GSM is designed to provide a comprehensive range of services and features to the users not available on analog cellular networks.
THE GSM HAS CERTAIN TARGET:
1)Support for international roaming
2)High-quality signal.
3)High spectral efficiency
4)Low-cost.
5)Security features 6)Easy installation
The GSM SERVICES ARE GROUPED INTO THREE CATAGORIES: 1. Teleservices (TS)
2. Bearer services (BS)
3. Supplementary services (SS).
TELESERVICES:
1)Regular telephony, emergency calls, and voice messaging are within TS Telephony.
2)An emergency call is a feature that allows the mobile subscriber to contact a nearby emergency service, such as police, by dialling a unique number.
3)Voice messaging permits a message to be stored within the voice mailbox of the called party either because the called party is not reachable .
Teleservice(cont)..
4) GSM has one more Teleservice that is designed for short, paging type messages. This Teleservice, called Short Message Service (SMS) 5) SMS is a bidirectional service for sending short alphanumeric (up to 160 bytes) messages in a store and forward fashion
BEARER SERVICE:
Data services, short message service (SMS), are within BS. Rates up to 9.6 Kbit/s are supported. With a suitable data terminal or computer connected directly to the mobile apparatus, data may be sent through circuit-switched or packet-switched networks.
SUPPLEMENTARY SERVICE: CALL FORWADING:The Call Forwarding Supplementary Service is used to divert calls from the original recipient to another number, and is normally set up by the subscriber himself. It can be used by the subscriber to divert calls from the Mobile Station when the subscriber is not available, and so to ensure that calls are not lost.
NEWER GSM SERVICE: MULTIPARTY SERVICE:This service is similar to a conference type service, in that several calls may be connected with all parties talking to each other.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TRANSFER USER TO USER SIGNALING:
1)This service allows the subscriber to send and receive information to and from the person with whom they have an active call.
2)The amount of information is limited, but may include text (such as names and addresses), and numbers (such as telephone numbers).
GSM PROTOCOL HAS THREE TYPES:
1) radio resource maNAGEMENT(rr)
2)mobility management(mm)
3)connection management(cm)
radio resource management:
1)The RR protocol manage establishment of a link, between the MS and the MSC.
2)The main functional components involved are the MS, the BSS, and the MSC.
3)It manages handovers and call termination.
MOBILITY MANAGEMENT:
1) Mobility Management is one of the major functions of a GSM . 2)The MM layer is built on top of the RR layer.
2)It handles the functions that arise from subscriber, as well as the authentication and security.
CONNCTION MANAGEMENT:
1.)The CM layer is responsible for supplementary service management, and Short Message Service (SMS) .
2) Other functions of the CM sub layer include call establishment and call release.
