GREEN BUILDING
#1

The Buildings are part of basic needs. It is for protecting us from Nature's extremes: cold, heat, wind and Rain. But these structures affect and shape our environment too. Constructing and op-erating buildings requires enormous amounts of energy, water, and materials and creates large amounts of waste. Where and how they are built affects the ecosystems around us in countless ways. And the buildings themselves create new indoor environments that present new environ-mental problems and challenges.

As the environmental impact of buildings becomes more apparent, a new field called green building is Arising to reduce that impact at the source. Green or sustainable building is the practice of creating healthier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renova-tion, operation, maintenance, and demolition.

Green building is a rational response to two driving forces – firstly, a new set of resource constraints facing the globe and secondly, to a demand for healthier, more productive environments for users. “Green building is a natural evolution of the building sector, responding to an emerging set of economic forces. It is not a passing fad, but the way things will have to be done in future”

Green Building Concept
The `Green Building' concept is gaining importance in various countries, including India. These are buildings that ensure that waste is minimized at every stage during the construction and operation of the building, resulting in low costs, according to experts in the technology.
Green Building
Green Buildings are also known as high performance or sustainable building.
It is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from sitting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction.
What make’s a building “Green” ?
Green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by:
Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources
Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity
Reducing waste, pollution and environment degradation
NEED FOR SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS:
Since the Industrial Revolution, the world has witnessed incalculable technological achievements, population growth, and corresponding increases in resource use
As we enter a new century, we are recognizing the side effects of our activities.
Ability to provide the resources required to sustain life while retaining the capacity to regenerate and remain viable.
As the world‘s population continues to expand, implementation of resource-efficient measures in all areas of human activity is imperative
CONVETIONAL BUILDINGS:
Water Efficiency
Dual-flush toilets
Waterless urinals
Sensor-controlled faucets
87.5% of irrigation system to be de-commissioned after 1 year plant establishment period
Material Efficiency
Utilize local / regional expertise, labor & materials
Specify materials with no or low VOC content, low toxicity and recycled content
Consider products made from renewable resources
Use prefab systems to reduce on-campus waste
Energy Efficiency
28% better than ASHRAE 90.1 standard
Annual energy savings of 6.4MWh, equal to $180,000
Heat recovery systems
Demand ventilation
Maximum natural lighting
Motion sensor lighting controls
Buildings and Energy
Energy
US buildings account for ½ of total US energy consumption
Indoor Environmental Quality
Low-emitting materials
CO2 monitoring
Displacement ventilation
Maximum natural lighting
Green housekeeping program
Cost :
The most criticized issue about constructing environmentally friendly buildings is the price.
The stigma is between the knowledge of up-front cost vs. life-cycle cost.
The savings in money come from more efficient use of utilities which result in decreased energy bills.
Environmental benefits
Enhance and protect ecosystems and biodiversity
Improve air and water quality
Reduce solid waste
Conserve natural resources
Economic benefits :
Reduce operating costs
Enhance asset value and profits
Improve employee productivity and satisfaction
Optimize life-cycle economic performance
Health and community benefits :
Improve air, thermal, and acoustic environments
Reduce allergies, asthma and even enhance your performance at work.
Enhance occupant comfort and health
Minimize strain on local infrastructure
Contribute to overall quality of life
STEPS TO ENSURE SUCCESS
Awareness should be made in Public
Special steps should be taken by government
CONCLUSION :
There is a need to use our energy resources very efficiently by using sustainable buildings.
Within 10 years when compared to conventional buildings we can reduce the electricity consumption by 85%& gas consumption by 93%.
So these buildings are eco-friendly, we need to create awareness

GREEN BUILDINGS A SOLUTION FOR THE FUTURE
Definition of GREEN BUILDING
A building which is like a kind of a tree that would purify air, accrue solar income, produce more energy than it consumes, create shade & shelter, enrich soil & change with seasons.
What led us to GREEN BUILDING ?
A building consumes :

2/5th of World energy production (excluding the energy required to harvest, manufacture & transport)
1/6th of all water pumped out of natural flows
¼th of all virgin wood harvested (excluding furniture)
Ecological Footprints (concept developed by William Rees)
We are consuming resources like we live on more than 2 planet Earth
Factor 10 efficiency gain
If we are consuming the resources of 2 planets, then a Factor 2 reduction is needed just to get to 1 Earth consumption & further a Factor 10 to get sustainability & balance when development of the majority of the planet is considered.
Population growth
Resource consumption
Waste production

Goals of GREEN BUILDING
To satisfy motives of environmental, economic & social benefits
Reduce environmental impact of new buildings
An integrated & synergistic design of modern sustainability to both new construction & in the retrofitting of an existing structure
To bring together a vast array of practices & techniques to reduce and eliminate the impacts of new buildings
Introducing green architecture (sustainable design) into structures
Building materials from local sources, reduce loads, optimize systems & generate on site renewable energy
Siting & Structure design efficiency
Concept stage – has largest impact on cost & performance
Objective – minimize the total environmental impact associated with all life-cycle stages of the project
Buildings – are much more complex products, composed of a multitude of materials & components each constituting various design variables to be decided at design stage
Possibilities of outdoor public amenities
Pervious & Impervious soils
Access to nearest transportation
Existing vegetation should be viewed as an asset to enhance design & reduce the impacts of the development
Material selection & Efficiency
Green Building Decision Matrix
Issues related to material selection
Prioritization of issues

Green materials
Bamboo, straw, lumber, insulated concrete forms, dimension stone, recycled stone & other products that are non-toxic, reusable, renewable, or recyclable
Materials should be extracted & manufactured locally to the building site
But where possible off-site manufacturing also need to be considered to minimise waste, maximize recycling high quality elements, less noise & dust
Recycled industrial goods (EPA)
Energy efficiency
Include measures to reduce energy use
To increase efficiency of the building envelope they may use high-efficiency windows & insulation in walls, ceilings & floors
Passive solar building design is implemented
Maximum daylighting(effective window placement) to be provided
Solar water heating reduces energy loads
On-site generation of renewable energy – solar energy, wind power, hydropower, biomass
IEQ enhancement
Indoor Environmental Quality, one of the five environmental categories
Addresses design & construction guidelines such as:
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Reduce VOC’s & other microbial contaminants
Buildings rely on HVAC systems
Zero or low emission products improve IAQ
Thermal Quality
Personal temperature & airflow control over HVACs
Properly deisgned building envelope
Lighting Quality
Creating a high performance luminous environment
Waste & Toxic Reduction
Reduce waste of energy, water & materials
During construction phase : reduce amount of materials going to landfills
Well-designed buildings : help reduce waste generated by occupants by providing on-site solutions
Compost bins-to reduce matter going to landfills
Greywater-used for non-potable purposes & irrigation
Biogas plants (biological waste, human waste)
Create carbon sinks
Cost & pay-off
Initial cost is high
Decreased energy bills
Gain is rendered through a life cycle
Different sectors could save $130bn on energy bills
Studies show that : Over a 20yr life period, green buildings have yielded $53 to $71 per square foot back on investment

The concept of Green Building is essentially based on the premise that economic development and urbanisation need not go against the flow of nature. Green Building principles reflect through the complete building life cycle and are aimed at reducing impact upon the environment. The essential element of green building is to make the most efficient use of resources such as energy, water and material, and to ensure that the building maintenance activities do not burden the environment.
