Global Optical Ethernet
#1

Abstract:
Ethernet has become the communications interface of choice for devices deeper and deeper into the network. The vast majority of users of the global Internet and corporate intranets see the Ethernet jack as their interface to the outside word. The scope of Ethernet was originally restricted to 10 Mbps interfaces and connections within the same Local Area Network (LAN) but has since expanded to cover a wide range of rates and extend across the campus as well. More universal than any other communications interface, the Ethernet jack has become the symbol of seamless integrated communications worldwide. Now Ethernet has become a serious contender as the interface between corporate enterprises and their service providers for connectivity across the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). Corporate users want to reap the benefits of Ethernetâ„¢s seamless integration, familiarity, economies of scale, and wide choice of rates when connecting to the outside world. Carriers have complied with the demands of their corporate customers by offering a variety of services over an Ethernet interface. The expanding scope of Ethernet has been built on a growing foundation of Ethernet standards. We present a survey and classification of emerging Ethernet service models and the standards required to deliver them effectively. Ethernet services fall into the broad categories of point-to- point Ethernet private lines (virtual leased lines), multipoint Ethernet Transparent LAN Services (Virtual Private LAN Services), and Ethernet access (most commonly in the form of Internet Access). Such services combine Ethernetâ„¢s traditional strengths with those embodied in IP and SONET standards for MAN/WAN networking. By bringing IP and SONET protocols to bear, management and operations problems are solved for Ethernet. This survey shows that Ethernet Services do not necessarily require a pure Ethernet architecture, but allow carriers to leverage and migrate smoothly from todayâ„¢s infrastructure. Nevertheless, a natural migration to an Ethernet-optimized network as Ethernet services grow in volume and importance will allow carriers to benefit from the same savings in equipment and operations that have fueled Ethernetâ„¢s success within the corporate enterprise
