The Generic Access Network (GAN), also known as UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access), is a telecommunication system that enables seamless roaming and transfer between local area networks and wide area networks using a mobile phone In dual mode. It enables mobile operators to deliver Multimedia Subsystem / Session Initiation Protocol (IMS / SIP) voice, data and IP applications to mobile phones. Its final objective is the convergence of mobile, fixed and Internet (Fixed Mobile Convergence). The local network may be based on private unlicensed spectrum technologies such as Bluetooth or 802.11, while the broad network is alternatively GSM / GPRS or UMTS mobile services. In the cellular network, the mobile telephone communicates through the air with a base station, through a base station controller, to servers in the bearer's central network. Under the GAN system, when the phone detects a LAN, it establishes a secure IP connection through a gateway to a server called GAN (GAN) on the company network. The GANC translates the signals from the handset so that they appear to come from another base station. Thus, when a mobile moves from a GSM network to a wireless network, it appears to the home network as if it were simply on a different base station. The system was initially named UMA and then renamed to GAN. It was developed by a group of operators and suppliers.

History

UMA was developed by a group of operators and supplier companies. Initial specifications were published on September 2, 2004. The companies then contributed to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specifications as part of the 3GPP work item "Generic Access to A / Gb Interfaces". On April 8, 2005, 3GPP approved the specifications for generic access to A / Gb interfaces for 3GPP Release 6 and renamed the system to GAN. But the term GAN is little known outside the 3GPP community, and the term UMA is more common in marketing.

Modes of operation

The original GAN specification Release 6 supported a 2G (A / Gb) connection from the GANC to the mobile main network (MSC / GSN). Today [when?] All commercial deployments of GAN dual mode mobile phones are based on a 2G connection and all GAN compatible devices are 2G / dual mode Wi-Fi. The specification, however, defines the support for the operation of the multimode handset. Therefore, 3G / 2G / Wi-Fi phones are compatible with the standard. The first 3G / UMA devices were announced in the second half of 2008.
A typical UMA / GAN telephone will have four modes of operation:
• GERAN-only: uses only cellular networks
• GERAN-preferred: uses cellular networks if available, otherwise the 802.11 radio
• GAN-preferred: uses an 802.11 connection if an access point is in the range, otherwise the cellular network
• GAN only: only uses the 802.11 connection
In all cases, the phone scans GSM cells when it is turned on for the first time, to determine its location area. This allows the carrier to route the call to the nearest GANC, establish the correct tariff plan and comply with existing roaming agreements.
At the end of 2007, the GAN specification was improved to support 3G (Iu) interfaces from the GANC to the mobile main network (MSC / GSN). This native 3G interface can be used for dual mode phones as well as providing femtocell 3G services. The GAN version 8 documentation describes these new capabilities.
