Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) is a type of size exclusion chromatography (SEC), which separates analytes based on size. The technique is often used for polymer analysis. As a technique, SEC was first developed in 1955 by Lathe and Ruthven. The term gel permeation chromatography can be traced back to J.C. Moore of the Dow Chemical Company who investigated the technique in 1964 and patented column technology was awarded to Waters Corporation, who subsequently marketed this technology in 1964.   GPC systems and consumables are also available from several manufacturers. It is often necessary to separate polymers, both for analysis and for purifying the desired product. When polymers are characterized, it is important to consider the polydispersity index (PDI) as well as the molecular weight. The polymers may be characterized by a variety of molecular weight definitions including the number average molecular weight (Mn), weight average molecular weight (Mw) (see molar mass distribution), size average molecular weight (Mz) or The molecular weight viscosity (Mv). GPC allows the determination of PDI as well as Mv and based on other data, the Mn, Mw, and Mz can be determined.

Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) is an analytical technique that separates the dissolved macromolecules by size based on their elution of columns filled with a porous gel. When GPC is coupled with light scattering, viscometer and concentration detectors (known as triple detection), it can measure absolute molecular weight, molecular size and intrinsic viscosity, and generate information on macromolecular structure, conformation, aggregation and branching .
Using GPC to measure molecular weight and these other properties, scientists can characterize molecules such as synthetic polymers as well as natural polymers such as polysaccharides.
For all these molecules, these parameters are closely related to their operation in countless applications. With this technique,
• Polymer chemicals can control the strength, hardness, and performance of the polymer.
• Pharmaceutical producers can adapt product behavior as eye drops.
• Food producers can better understand the performance and quality of the product.
From novel polymers to formulations and polymer additives, in coatings and coatings applications to food and pharmaceuticals, Malvern offers a range of GPC systems or individual GPC detectors including SEC-MALS to meet your application needs.
