A gas turbine also called a combustion turbine. It is a type of internal combustion engine. It has a rotary compressor upstream coupled to a turbine downstream, and a combustion chamber or area, called a combustion chamber, in the middle. The basic operation of the gas turbine is similar to that of the steam power plant, except that the working fluid is air instead of water. Fresh atmospheric air flows through a compressor that raises it to a higher pressure. Then energy is added by spraying fuel into the air and igniting it so that the combustion generates a high temperature flow. This high pressure gas at high temperature enters a turbine, where it expands to the exhaust pressure, producing a work output on the shaft in the process. The work of the turbine shaft is used to drive the compressor and other devices, such as an electric generator that can be coupled to the shaft. The energy that is not used for the work of the shaft comes out in the exhaust gases, so they have a high temperature or a high speed. The purpose of the gas turbine determines the design to maximize the most desirable form of energy. Gas turbines are used to propel aircraft, trains, ships, electric generators, pumps, gas compressors and tanks.
