A gas turbine, also called a combustion turbine, is a type of internal combustion engine. It has an upwardly rotatable compressor coupled to a turbine downstream, and a combustion chamber or area, called the combustion chamber, between them. The basic operation of the gas turbine is similar to that of the steam turbine, except that the working fluid is air instead of water. Fresh atmospheric air flows through a compressor that carries it to a higher pressure. The energy is then added by spraying the fuel into the air and igniting it so the combustion generates a high temperature flow. This high-temperature high-pressure gas enters a turbine, where it expands to the exhaust pressure, producing a shaft output in the process. The work of the turbine shaft is used to power the compressor and other devices such as an electric generator that can be coupled to the shaft. The energy that is not used for the shaft work comes out in the exhaust gases, so these have a high temperature or a high speed. The purpose of the gas turbine determines the design so that the most desirable form of energy is maximized. Gas turbines are used to power airplanes, trains, ships, electric generators, pumps, gas compressors and tanks.
