Gas Insulated Transmission Lines (GIL) are the safe and flexible alternative to overhead lines and occupy much less space providing the same power transmission. Since they hardly affect the landscape, and their minimal electromagnetic radiation means they can also be used nearby, or even inside buildings, GIL can be considered for a wide range of applications. They are suitable for providing a continuation of underground overhead lines, connecting power plants to the mains, or as a way to save space to connect the main industrial plants to the public grid.

Engineering of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology invented the isolated gas line (GIL) in 1965 and the first installation was carried out in 1975. The basic structure of the GIL consists of N2 and SF6 gases inside the enclosure, surrounding an aluminum conductor. The outer coated casing, also made of aluminum, encapsulates the entire structure. There is an electrical section up to 5,300 mm square. The main elements of a GIL are conductors and enclosures, insulators, particle traps, aluminum bellows and enclosure joints.

There are several methods for installing gas insulated lines. First, GILs can be installed above ground. Above ground, they are still capable of performing high power transmissions. They can also withstand many negative environmental factors such as pollution, solar radiation and extreme temperatures. This, once again, makes the GIL ideal for cities and metropolitan areas. Of course, GILs can also be installed in underground tunnels. This method is popular in agricultural farms and agricultural areas - once the GIL is installed underground, the soil above it is still completely viable for crop cultivation. In hydroelectric plants, the vertical installation of GILs is popular. There is no fire hazard associated with GIL systems. It is also possible to install insulated gas lines directly underground, without a tunnel. In this case, land above GIL is usually still viable for agricultural use.
