A simulation of the speed control of a DC motor using fuzzy logic control (FLC) in the MATLAB environment. The fuzzy logic controller designed in this study applies the required control voltage based on the motor speed error (e) and its change (ce). The performance of the driver system was evaluated using digital simulations using the Matlab / spl reg / Simulink toolbox. The results of the simulation show that the control with FLC exceeds the PI control in terms of overshoot and steady state error.


The DC motor is a power actuator that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The DC motor is used in applications where wide speed ranges are required. The greatest advantage of DC motors is speed control. The term speed control means intentional change of drive speed to a value required to perform the specific work process. The speed control is performed manually by the operator or by means of some automatic control device. DC motors are best suited for wide range speed control and therefore are used in many adjustable speed drives. The torque characteristics of DC motors are much better than those of AC motors. In addition, the DC motors provide excellent control of the speed of acceleration and deceleration. DC motors have a long practice of use as adjustable speed machines and a wide range of options have evolved. In these applications, the motor must be accurately controlled to give the desired performance. Speed controllers are designed for the purpose of controlling the speed of the DC motor to run many tasks. Speed control means intentional change of drive speed to a value required to perform the specific work process. Speed control is a different concept of speed regulation where there is a natural change in speed due to the change in load on the shaft. The speed control is performed manually by the operator or by means of some automatic control device. One of the important characteristics of the DC motor is that its speed can be controlled with relative ease. The main advantage of dc motors is the ease of speed control. The term speed control means intentional speed variation made by automatic controllers or by manual means. To further improve the speed response characteristics of the DC motor, another controller has been developed called Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC). 

The control of fuzzy logic is a linguistic control algorithm that uses general statements instead of the mathematical equations to define the control scheme of the answers. Due to this technique, a wide range of values are included in the set which leads to a better uptime, less speed fluctuations and overshoots. With the fuzzy logic controller, manual tuning is eliminated and intelligent tuning takes center stage with satisfactory performance. There are several conventional types, such as Proportional (P), Proportional Integral (PI), Proportional derivative (PD). Integral derivative controller (PID) and Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC). This work focuses mainly on the evaluation of the performance of the DC motor using the integral proportional shunt controller (PID) and the fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The results of the simulation are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this controller and compare it with the PID controller using MATLAB / SIMULINK.
