Abstract

In terms of the ability to produce diverse and complex geometric features, machining operations are one of the most versatile and accurate manufacturing processes. This chapter focuses on machining processes using sharp-cutting tools to remove material from workpieces by shear deformation. The main principle of these processes is providing relative speed between cutting tools and workpieces, which have been completed through machine tools. Machine tools have been discussed and classified based on planned cut tools: Single Point Cutting Tools, MultiPoint Cutting Tools, or Grinding Wheel. Machining centers, which have flexibility to operate various machining with different cutting tools on more than one sector, are also discussed. Drives and controls are responsible for providing and controlling the speed of machine tool components respectively. Thus, industrial design and technologies of spindle drive and feed drive, as well as numerical control, are described in this chapter. In the end, various mechanical designs have been introduced in the context of kinetic mechanisms for manufacturing floors to provide relative speed between equipment and work. Compared to traditional machine tools, each of these designs has entered today's manufacturing floor, which brings some excellence. This chapter discusses some of the important features of these emerging machine tool designs, i.e. industrial robots, parallel and hybrid kinetic machine tools and recombinant machine tools.
