A student information system (SIS), student management system, school management software, or student management system is a management information system for educational institutions to manage student data. Student information systems provide skills to enroll students in courses, document grading, transcripts, student test scores and other assessment grades, construction of student schedules, attendance tracking Of students and the management of many other data needs related to students. A SIS should not be confused with a learning management system or virtual learning environment, in which course materials, assignments and assessment tests can be published electronically.
The SIS can include features that can be considered as a business resource planning system or ERP for a corporate client. As such, many of the problems with ERP system selection methodology, implementation and operation of an ERP system also apply. These systems vary in size, scope, and capability, from packages that are deployed in relatively small organizations to cover only student records, to enterprise-wide solutions that cover most aspects of large multi-accountability organizations. Many systems can scale to different levels of functionality by purchasing supplementary modules and can usually be configured by their home institutions to meet local needs.
