AppleTalk was a proprietary suite of networking protocols developed by Apple Inc. for its Macintosh computers. AppleTalk includes a number of features that allow local area networks to connect without the need for preconfiguration or the need for a centralized router or server of any type. AppleTalk-equipped connected systems automatically assign addresses, update the distributed namespace, and configure any necessary inter-network routing.

AppleTalk was released in 1985, and was the primary protocol used by Apple devices throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Also released versions for the IBM PC and compatible and the Apple IIGS. AppleTalk support was also available on most networked printers (especially laser printers), on some file servers, and on a number of routers.

The emergence of TCP / IP during the 1990s led to a reimplementation of most of these types of support in that protocol and AppleTalk was left unsupported since the release of Mac OS X v10.6 in 2009. Many of the more self-configuring features Advanced from AppleTalk Since it was introduced in Bonjour, while Universal Plug and Play satisfies similar needs.

Just before its launch in early 1985, AppleBus was renamed AppleTalk. The system had a number of limitations, including a speed of only 230.4 kbit / s, a maximum distance of 1000 feet from end to end, and only 32 nodes per LAN. But as the basic hardware was built on the Mac, adding nodes only cost about $ 50 for the adapter box. In comparison, Ethernet or Token Ring cards cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. In addition, the entire network stack requires only about 6 kB of RAM, allowing it to run on any Mac.

AppleTalk's relatively slow speed allowed for additional reductions in cost. Instead of using the balanced transmit and receive circuits of the RS-422, AppleTalk's personal network cabling used a single common electrical system, which limited speeds up to 500 kbit / s, but allowed the removal of a conductor. This means that common three-wire cables could be used for wiring. In addition, the adapters were designed to be "self-terminating", meaning that the nodes at the end of the network could simply leave their last connector disconnected. It was not necessary for the cables to be connected again in a loop, or the need for cubes or other devices.

The system was designed for future expansion; The routing system allowed the expansion to 255 nodes in a LAN (although only 32 could be used at that moment), and through the use of "bridges" (that came to be known like "routers", although technically they are not the same) LANs in larger collections. The "Zones" allowed the devices to be boarded within a bridge connected to the Internet. In addition, AppleTalk was designed from the ground up to allow its use with any possible underlying physical link.

The main advantage of AppleTalk was that it was completely maintenance free. To attach a device to a network, simply plugged the adapter into the machine and then connected a cable from it to any free port of any other adapter. AppleTalk internal protocols negotiated an operative network address number, automatically gave the computer a human-readable name, and compiled a list of the names and types of other machines on the network so that the user could navigate the devices through Of the GUI Selector. AppleTalk was so easy to use that ad-hoc networks tended to pop up whenever multiple Macs were in the same room.  Apple would later use this in an ad that shows a network being created between two seats on an airplane.
