DC motors are widely used in adjustable speed drives and position control applications. Their speeds below the base speed can be controlled by the armature voltage control. Speeds above the base speed are obtained by field flow control. Since the speed control method for DC motors is simpler and less expensive than that of AC motors, DC motors are preferred when wide bandwidth control is required. DC switches also provide variable DC output voltage from a fixed DC input voltage.
