World Pharmacists Day 2015: celebrating and promoting our profession

Dr Carmen Peña, President of the International Federation of Pharmacists (FIP) Worldwide, on Friday 25 September, pharmacists will celebrate World Pharmacists Day. This special day, already in its fifth year, was established by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the global federation of national associations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, which maintains official relations with the World Health Organization. Through our 132 member organizations, we represent more than three million drug experts. September 25th was suggested by our Turkish members because it is the date on which the IFJ emerged in 1912. The purpose of World Pharmacists Day is to promote activities that promote and defend the role of the pharmacist in improving health in all corners of the world. This year's theme, developed by FIP, is "Pharmacist (s): your partner (s) in health". Medicines must go hand in hand with pharmaceutical experience, ie with pharmacists. This partnership is essential for the responsible use of medicines. But other associations are also important. Each day, three million pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists from around the world act as patient partners, other health professionals and other scientists, as well as politicians, with a shared vision of better health. The topic covers the provision of medicines and advice to hospital and community pharmacists, but it addresses all elements of the supply chain, including research and industry. Throughout the world our profession is clearly demonstrating all the requirements of large associations; shared goals, commitment, vital skills and relationship, as well as the ability to have difficult conversations and overcome obstacles. We have to let people know this. This year's World Pharmacists Day can be used to highlight the trust and close collaboration that pharmacists have with patients and other health professionals. It also emphasizes that the concept of pharmacists is the provider of solutions to governments through their services; a key tactical approach in the FIP vision. The partnership, ie cooperation to ensure that the best possible quality of health care is provided to individuals and the community at large, is a component of the IFJ Oath Model for Pharmacists. The concept of interprofessional collaborative practice is also growing in the education and practice of health professionals, as described in a statement from the Global Alliance of Health Professions. On World Pharmacists Day 2014, great efforts were made to communicate the message "Access to pharmacists is access to health". A wide range of activities were organized, ranging from massive deworming in Accra, Ghana, and blood delivery at the Sultan ul Uloom College of Pharmacy in Hyderabad, India, to pharmaceutical flashmobs in the Philippines and television interviews of pharmacists in Ireland. I invite colleagues from around the world to celebrate our profession and their many associations this year, as well as to participate in other FIP activities throughout the year. Use World Pharmacists Day as an opportunity to promote authorities, other professions and the media, as well as the general public, the valuable role we play - and could play - in achieving great health for all.
