Abstract
Firebot is an autonomous robot that wascreated to compete in the IEEESoutheastCon 2003 HardwareCompetition. This paper discusses thedevelopment of each component of therobot that is designed to find a small firerepresented by a light emitting diode ina model home and extinguish it. Thispaper will talk about each component ofthe robot from the start signal to therobot platform to the line following androom finding and finishing with the firedetection.
1. Introduction
Every year IEEE Region 3 holdsthe SoutheastCon Conference in whichteams from different universities cancompete in the Hardware Competition[1]. The Hardware Competition of the2003 IEEE SoutheastCon requiresdesigning and building a robot that willgo through a model of a house and detectand extinguish a small fire. The robot isinitially lowered in the designated homearea and will start within 30 secondsupon hearing the starting signal. It willthen go through the house structure thatis made of black painted wood. Thewalls are 23 cm high and 2 cm thickwith doorways 23 cm wide. Allmeasurements are guaranteed to beaccurate to 4%. The floor plan is shownin Figure 1 [1]. There is a 1.9 cm linemade with white Tartan General Purposetape across each doorway and runningdown the center of each hallway. Thisdesign allows for the robot to use linefollowing in order to maneuver
