The importance of an adequate and efficient road drainage system and the impact of a poor drainage system on road performance have been well recognized in the past. The value of proper drainage and road maintenance can not be neglected. Therefore, proper planning and design of the road drainage system is very important to prevent water from seeping into the road surface, removing it from the driving lanes and taking it away from the road. The road drainage system includes seamless drains along the road in rural areas, aligned drains in urban areas, drains in the location of high embankments, medium drains / opening in super high sections, drainage in the toll plaza, By and bus bay and drainage at intersections / exchanges.
Drains are the common drainage components of the road that intercept the surface water flowing along the road, shoulders and side slopes that flank the road. The process of surface drainage involves the collection and then the removal of surface water. Water from the pavement surface is immediately removed by providing camber and cross-slope to the pavement. The curvature and slope are designed according to the intensity of the precipitation and the type of pavement. To prevent water infiltration, the surface of the road becomes impermeable to the extent possible.
Based on the shape of the drain, it is classified as:
• Rectangular
• Trapezoidal
• Triangular
• Semicircular
