Fiber optic differential pressure sensor
A differential pressure sensor system is provided which is an improvement over prior sensor systems. The provided sensor system can be used to determine parameters of fluid flowing through a tubular string in a well.Basically, this system has an optical fiber extending in a wall having a first side and a second side, each of the sides being exposed to pressure in the flow passage.An optical medium is attached to one side of the wall, so that the optical medium detects hoop strain in that side , the wall first side being in contact with a first pressure source external to the sensor, and the wall second side being in contact with a second pressure source. The first and the second pressure sources form the first and second portions of the flow passage respectively. the flow passage is formed through a tubular string.The optical medium is embedded in the member.a generally flexible membrane isolates the optical medium from contact with fluid. This optical medium is positioned between the member and the membrane. the optical medium includes a first strain sensing element which responds to strain in the member due to the first and second pressure sources.the strain sensed by the first strain sensing element is compressive strain, and the second element senses the tensile strain.
