M_Map: A mapping package for Matlab

M_Map is a set of mapping tools written for Matlab v5 and later. These include:

Routines to project data in 19 different spherical projections (and determine inverse mappings)
A grid generation routine to make nice axes with limits either in lat/long terms or in planar X/Y terms.
A coastline database (with 1/4 degree resolution)
A global elevation database (1 degree resolution)
Hooks into freely available high-resolution coastline and bathymetry databases
New in release 1.4h are

ETOPO2v2 and ETOPO1 support.

Handled some warnings about BITMAX that arise in Matlab 2014b. Note - I have only been able to fix or workaround SOME of the really bad bugs in 2014b. Use with caution (or better yet don't use). EPS output in particular is really awful, even if the screen plot looks "nice". Fortunately mathworks "may consider fixing this in future releases".
Added option to output national+state or national borders only in m_gshhs.
New in release 1.4g are

m_ellipse.m to plot tidal ellipses (say, from T_Tide )

Option to use either decimal-degrees or degrees/decimal-minutes in grid axis labels
Matlab 2013b has a bad bug in the dataaspectratio axes property that affects pretty much everything graphical. This version of M_Map has a workaround that MOSTLY works, but it would be better to avoid using 2013b.

Geographic Data Import and Export
Mapping Toolbox imports a wide range of GIS and geospatial file formats, enabling you to read both vector and raster data into the MATLAB environment. The toolbox helps you reduce access time and improve memory usage by providing functionality for specific file types to read a portion of a file and downsample data prior to use. The toolbox supports georeferenced imagery and other raster data grids, including orthoimagery, geolocated satellite swaths, digital terrain elevation models, and various global data grids.

Mapping Toolbox also exports data to a number of file formats, enabling you to share data with applications such as Google Earth™ and ArcGIS®. Using the toolbox with MATLAB or Image Processing Toolbox™ provides access to additional file formats.

File formats and data products supported by Mapping Toolbox include:

Raster file formats, such as GeoTIFF, USGS DEM, DEM, DTED, Arc ASCII Grid, GTOPO30, ETOPO, and worldfile
Vector file formats, such as ESRI® shapefiles, KML, GPX, VMAP0, and GSHHS

Mapping Toolbox provides visualization functions and an app for producing customized 2D and 3D map displays. The map displays can be simple or sophisticated, and can be tuned to your application. You can readily combine raster and vector data sets of different scales in the same display. For example, you can display images and data grids in their correct positions—regardless of resolution or area covered—and then overlay vector map features.

With the visualization functions in the toolbox, you can:

Create 2D map displays with raster and vector data
Create 3D map displays with customized lighting, shading and perspective
Create contour maps from raster and geolocated grid data
Create thematic maps, drape imagery over 3D surfaces, and display maps as images
