Fayol "14 Principles" was one of the earliest theories of management to be created, and remains one of the most comprehensive. It is considered to be among the most influential contributors to the concept of modern management, although people do not refer to "The 14 Principles" often today.
The theory is framed in the administrative thinking of the school administration (unlike the school of scientific management, led by Fredrick Taylor Add to My Personal Learning Plan).
The 14 Principles of Management of Fayol
The principles of Fayol are listed below:
- Division of Labor - When employees are specialized, production can increase because they become more and more skilled and efficient.
- Authority - Managers must have the authority to give orders, but they must also keep in mind that with authority comes responsibility.
- Discipline - Discipline must be maintained in organizations, but methods for doing so may vary.
- Command Unit - Employees must have only one direct supervisor.
- Management Unit - Teams with the same objective must be working under the direction of a manager, using a plan. This will ensure that the action coordinates correctly.
- Subordination of individual interests to the general interest - The interests of an employee should not be allowed to be more important than those of the group. This includes managers.
- Remuneration - Employee satisfaction depends on fair remuneration for all. This includes financial and non-financial compensation.
- Centralization - This principle refers to the closeness of employees to the decision-making process. It is important to seek a proper balance.
- Escalation Chain - Employees should be aware of where they are in the organization's hierarchy, or chain of command.
- Order - Workplace facilities must be clean, tidy, and safe for employees. Everything must have its place.
- Equity - Managers must be fair to staff at all times, maintain discipline and act kindly when appropriate.
- Stability of Personnel Ownership - Managers should strive to minimize employee turnover. Personnel planning should be a priority.
- Initiative - Employees must have the necessary level of freedom to create and carry out plans.
- Esprit de Corps - Organizations should strive to promote team spirit and unity.
