The separation of an image into cartoons and texture components is useful in image processing applications such as image compression, image and image segmentation. The influential model of Yves Meyer's cartoon texture decomposition involves deriving a functional energy by choosing the appropriate spaces and functionalities. Minimizers of functional derivative energy are cartoon and texture components of an image. In this study, the cartoon part of an image is separated, reconstructing from the pixels of the filtered versions of the total variation of the multiple scale of the original image that is sought to decompose into the parts of the cartoon and the texture. A pixel by pixel selection criterion of information theory is used to choose the contributing pixels and their scales.
The decomposition of an image into a geometric part and a textural part has proved to be a challenging problem with several applications. Since the theoretical advance of Y. Meyer, many variational methods and minimization techniques have been proposed for this task. This document uses a different approach based on the low / high pass filter with directional filters. This approach modifies the algorithm proposed in Buades et al. (IEEE Trans Image Process 19 (8): 1978-1986, 2010) improving its performance near image discontinuities while maintaining the simplicity and speed of a linear model. Comparisons with the variational methods illustrate the flexibility of the proposed algorithm.
