INTRODUCTION
This presentation describes the current state-of-the-art, emphasises the multi-disciplinary nature and conveys the enormous impact that nanotechnology will progressively make on materials, product and process research and thence on to manufacturing technologies, industry and the economies of countries throughout the world.

At first the term Nano technology was coined by the physist Richard Feynman in 1965.
"The whole idea behind this is I want people to understand a little bit more about nanotechnology," Orfescu said. "I'm trying to make a parallel with the macro world --- the one we see with the naked eye."
DEFINITION
Nano technology is the hybrid science combining engineering and chemistry that have application in the real world. The area of Nano technology lets one build elaborate structures, atom by atom on a scale of 1to 100 Nano meters that can store information, switch electrical signals, convert sunlight to electricity
(1 Nano meter = billionth of a meter )i.e., 1/80,000 of the diameter of human hair or 10times diameter of hydrogen atom.
NEED FOR NANO TECHNOLOGY?
Allows the placement of small structures placed with precision ,simplicity and low cost.
Leads to economic growth.
Enhances national security .
Improves the quality of life.
Leads to create jobs.
NANO TECHNOLOGY IN NATURE
In nature Nano particles have existed for billons of years ago. It often comes as a surprise to learn that the Romans and Chinese were using Nano particles thousands of years ago.
Of course they were not aware that they were using nanotechnology, and as they had no control over particle size, or even any knowledge of the nanoscale they were not using nanotechnology as currently defined.

SCIENCE FICTION
Nanotechnology is anything but science fiction. At present over 600 companies are currently active in nanotechnology, from small venture capital backed start-ups to some of the world's largest corporations such as IBM and Samsung.
Governments and corporations worldwide have ploughed over $4 billion into nanotechnology in the last year alone. Almost every university in the world has a nanotechnology department, or will have at least applied for the funding for one.
APPLICATIONS OF NANO TECHNOLOGY
THE NANO TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY
Many of the companies working with nanotechnology are simply applying our knowledge of the nanoscale to existing industries, whether it is improved drug delivery mechanisms for the pharmaceutical industry, or producing nanoclay particles for the plastics industry.
New industries will be generated as a result of this understanding, the telephone, computing, the internet and many other industries, all of which would not have been possible without it.
NANO MACHINES & NANO DRUG’S
Current medical applications of nanotechnology are far more likely to involve improved delivery methods.
The drugs are delivered exactly where they are needed. Thus minimizing side effects on healthy tissue and cells.
As far as navigation goes, delivery will be by exactly the same method that the human body uses, going with the flow and `dropping anchor' when the drug encounters its target.
Shrinking machines down to the size where they can be inserted into the human body in order to detect and repair diseased cells is a popular idea of the benefits of nanotechnology, and one that even comes close to reality.
It turns out that there are whole ranges of more efficient ways that nanotechnology can enable better drug delivery without resorting to the use of nanomachines.
NANO FILTERS
Much water today is wasted because it is almost but not entirely pure.
According to a World Bank document, water is a major concern of the U.N. Almost half the world's population lacks access to basic sanitation, and almost 1.5 billion have no access to clean water.
Physical filters with nanometer-scale pores can remove 100% of bacteria, viruses, and even prions.
The ability to recycle water from any source for any use can save huge amounts of water effective water filter also permits the generation of quite "dirty" waste streams from agricultural and industrial operations.

Nanoshells that imbed only with tumors and can be heated by infrared radiation to destroy the cancer and leave the healthy cells unharmed. Nanospectra, Biosciences, Inc. has applied to the FDA to begin clinical trials.
