advantages and disadvantages of a slip gauges

Slip gauges are the "standard of length" universally accepted in industries. These are the simplest possible means to accurately measure the linear dimensions. For the tool room and other precision work, ordinary methods of measurement are not always accurate. The micrometer and vernier caliper can be used to verify fine tolerance within 0.002 to 0.02 mm, but for fine tolerance they are not effective. Therefore, there is a need for an instrument that can measure the fine tolerance limit.

The means to do so are 'slide meters'. They can be used to measure tolerances in the range of 0.001 to 0.0005 mm very accurately. Slip gauges are manufactured in five degrees of precision. Calibration grade, grade 00, grade 0, grade I and grade II, in decreasing order of accuracy.

Slip gauges are often called Johannsen gauges too, as Johannsen originated them. These are rectangular steel blocks that have a cross section of approximately 30 by 10 mm. First they harden to resist wear and are carefully stabilized to be independent of any subsequent variation in size or shape. The longer indicators on the adjustment and length bars harden only locally at their measurement ends. After hardening, the blocks are carefully finished on the measuring faces with such a fine degree of finish, flatness and precision that either of these two faces when perfectly clean can be 'twisted' together. This is achieved by pressing the faces in contact (holding them perpendicular) and then imparting a small twisting motion while maintaining the contact pressure. The contact pressure is sufficient to keep the two sliding gauges in contact and without additional intentional pressure. It is found that the twisting phenomenon occurs due to the molecular adhesion between a liquid film (whose thickness can be between 6 to 7 x 10-6 mm) and the coupling surfaces. When two meters are squeezed together and the total size of a stack made of two or more blocks so joined is exactly the sum of the constituent meters. The success of the system depends on the property of draining units to build combinations, since when combining selected meters of a conveniently arranged combination, almost any dimension can be built. They can be used as reference standards to transfer the dimensions of the unit of length from the primary standard to blocks of less precision and for the verification and grading of measuring devices, and length measurements for the regulation and adjustment of indicator measuring devices and for direct measurement of linear dimensions of the industrial component.
