EUCALYPTUS OPEN-SOURCE CLOUD-COMPUTING SYSTEM
#1

ABSTRACT
Cloud Computing is the delivery of computer resources through a Web Service interface (e.g.
SOAP or REST) on as-needed basis. The term cloud refers to the organization of the underlying physical
infrastructure remaining opaque to the end user. In other words, cloud computing gives a user access
to computer resources over a network through Web services, while the actual physical location and
organization of the equipment hosting these resources- be it in the next room or spread across the globeis
not necessarily known to the user. As such, these resources appear to the user as being ”in the cloud”.
There are mainly three different deployment models for a cloud; private cloud, public cloud and hybrid
cloud. The following are the broad categories of services available on the cloud:
 Infrastructure As A Service (IAAS)
 Platform As A Service (PAAS)
 Software As A Service (SAAS)
This cloud is generally available as a service to anyone on the internet. However, a variant called
”private cloud” is increasingly becoming popular for private infrastructure that has some of the attributes
of the cloud.
In this paper, we present EUCALYPTUS an opensource software framework for cloud computing
that implements what is commonly referred to as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS); systems that give
users the ability to run and control entire virtual machine instances deployed across a variety physical
resources. We outline the basic EUCALYPTUS design, features, Software architecture, its Components,
Installation and configuration in Ubuntu (UEC).
1. INTRODUCTION
Eucalyptus is software available under GPL that helps in creating and managing a private or even
a publicly accessible cloud. It provides an EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud)-compatible cloud computing
platform and S3 (Simple Storage Service)-compatible cloud storage platform. Eucalyptus has become
very popular and is seen as one of the key open source cloud platforms. Since Eucalyptus makes its
services available through EC2/S3 compatible APIs, the client tools written for AWS (Amazon Web
Services) can be used with Eucalyptus as well. The development of Eucalyptus software is sponsored by
Eucalyptus Systems, a venture-backed start-up. Eucalyptus works with most currently available Linux
distributions including Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), CentOS, SUSE Linux Enterprise
Server (SLES), openSUSE, Debian and Fedora. It can also host Microsoft Windows images. Similarly
Eucalyptus can use a variety of virtualization technologies including VMware, Xen and KVM hypervisors
to implement the cloud abstractions it supports. Eucalyptus is an acronym for ”Elastic Utility
Computing Architecture for Linking Your Programs To Useful Systems”. Eucalyptus began as a research
project in the field of high performance computing (HPC) under the direction of Professor Rich
Wolski in the Computer Science Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In January
2009, a company named Eucalyptus Systems, Inc. was founded to support the commercialization of the
Eucalyptus Cloud Computing platform.
For the Installation of Eucalyptus Cloud we used Ubuntu as the Operating System platform.
Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC)is a stack of applications from Canonical included with Ubuntu Server
Edition. UEC includes Eucalyptus along with a number of other open source software. UEC makes it
very easy to install and configure the cloud. Canonical also provides commercial technical support for
UEC.
