One of the biggest problems facing the world today is that of environmental pollution, which increases with each passing year and causes serious and irreparable damage to the land. Environmental pollution consists of five basic types of pollution, namely air, water, soil, noise and light. Air pollution is by far the most harmful form of pollution in our environment. Air pollution is caused by the harmful smoke emitted by cars, buses, trucks, trains and factories, namely sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Even the smoke from burning blades and cigarettes are harmful to the environment causing much damage to man and the atmosphere. Evidence of increased air pollution is seen in lung cancer, asthma, allergies and various respiratory problems along with serious and irreparable damage to flora and fauna. Even the most natural phenomenon of migratory birds has been hampered, with severe air pollution that prevents them from reaching their seasonal metropolitan destinations for centuries.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) released from refrigerators, air conditioners, deodorants and insect repellents cause serious damage to the Earth's environment. This gas has slowly damaged the atmosphere and depleted the ozone layer that leads to global warming.
Water pollution from industrial wastes released into lakes, rivers and other bodies of water has meant that sea life is no longer hospitable. Humans contaminate water with the large-scale disposal of garbage, flowers, ashes and other household waste. In many rural areas you can still find people bathing and cooking in the same water, making it incredibly dirty. Acid rain adds to water pollution in the water. In addition to these, thermal contamination and depletion of dissolved oxygen aggravate the already deteriorated condition of water bodies. Water pollution can also occur indirectly as a branch of soil contamination - through surface runoff and leaching to groundwater.
Acoustic pollution, soil pollution and light pollution are also damaging to the environment at an alarming rate. Sound pollution includes aircraft noise, car noise, buses and trucks, vehicle horns, loudspeakers and industry noise, as well as high intensity sonar effects that are extremely harmful to environment.
Maximum noise pollution occurs because of one of the best discoveries of modern science - the motor vehicle, which is responsible for about ninety percent of all unwanted noise around the world.
Soil contamination, which can also be called soil pollution, is the result of acid rain, contaminated water, fertilizers, etc., leading to poor harvests. Soil contamination occurs when chemicals are released by spills or leaks in the underground storage tank that release heavy contaminants into the soil. These may include hydrocarbons, heavy metals, MTBE, herbicides, pesticides and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Light Pollution includes transgression of light, over-illumination, and astronomical interference.
