Birds are a group of endothermic vertebrates, characterized by feathers, toothless jaws, laying hard eggs, a high metabolic rate, a four chambered heart and a strong but light skeleton. Birds live all over the world and range in size from the 5 cm (2 inch) bee hummingbird to the 9 foot (2.75 m) ostrich. They are classified as the class of tetrapods with the most living species, at about ten thousand, with more than half of these passerines, sometimes known as perching birds. Birds are the closest living relatives of crocodiles. Birds are descendants of extinct dinosaurs with feathers; This makes them the only surviving dinosaurs in modern classification systems.

The fossil record indicates that birds evolved from feathered ancestors within the theropod group, which are traditionally placed within the Saurischian dinosaurs, although a 2017 paper has put them into a proposed clade Ornithoscelida, along with Ornithischia. True birds first appeared during the Cretaceous period, about 120 million years ago. DNA-based evidence finds that birds diversified dramatically around the time of the Cretaceous-Palaeogene extinction event 66 million years ago, which reduced Pterosaurs and killed all non-avian dinosaur lineages. Birds, especially those from the southern continents, survived this event and then migrated to other parts of the world as they diversified during periods of global cooling. Early bird-like dinosaurs found outside the Aves class proper, in the larger Avialae group, have been found to date to the middle of the Jurassic period, about 170 million years ago. Many of these early stem birds, such as Archeopteryx, were not yet fully capable of flying, and many retained primitive features such as dental jaws rather than spikes and long bony tails.

Birds have wings that are more or less developed depending on the species; The only groups known without wings are the extinct moa and elephant birds. The wings, which evolved from the previous members, gave birds the ability to fly, although further evolution has led to loss of flight in non-flying birds, including rats, penguins and various endemic bird species. The digestive and respiratory systems of birds are also specially adapted for flight. Some bird species from aquatic environments, particularly seabirds and some waterfowl, have evolved even more for swimming.

Some birds, especially corvids and parrots, are among the most intelligent animals; Several species of birds make and use tools, and many social species transmit knowledge through generations, which is considered a form of culture. Many species migrate great distances annually. Birds are social, communicate with visual cues, calls and bird songs, and engage in social behaviors such as cooperative breeding and hunting, flocking and harassing predators. The vast majority of bird species are socially monogamous (referring to the distribution of social coexistence, other than genetic monogamy), usually during one breeding season at a time, sometimes for years, but rarely for all life. Other species have breeding systems that are polygynous (disposition of a male with many females) or, rarely, polyandrous (disposition of a female with many males). Birds produce offspring by laying eggs that are fertilized through sexual reproduction. They are usually placed in a nest and incubated by parents. Most birds have a prolonged period of parental care after hatching. Some birds, like hens, lay their eggs even when they are not fertilized, although unfertilized eggs do not produce offspring.

Many bird species are economically important as food for human consumption and raw material in manufacturing, with domestic and non-domesticated birds (poultry and game) being important sources of eggs, meat and feathers. Songbirds, parrots, and other species are popular as pets. Guano (bird droppings) are harvested for use as fertilizer. Birds appear prominently throughout human culture. About 120-130 species have become extinct due to human activity since the 17th century, and hundreds more before then. Human activity threatens about 1,200 species of birds with extinction, although efforts are being made to protect them. Recreational bird watching is an important part of the ecotourism industry.
