The use of superplasticizers (high-end water reducer) has become a common practice in North America. Superplasticizers are linear polymers containing sulfonic acid groups attached to the polymer backbone at regular intervals. The sulfonic acid groups are responsible for neutralizing the surface charges on the cement particles and causing dispersion, thus releasing the water bound in the agglomerations of cement particles and then altering the viscosity of the paste and the concrete.
The main purpose of the use of superplasticizers is to produce a fluid concrete with a high throughput in the range of 150 to 240 mm (6 to 9 inches) for use in heavily reinforced structures and in locations where adequate consolidation can not be achieved By vibration. The other main application is the production of high strength concrete w / c ranging from 0.30 to 0.40.
