Solar energy is the radiant light and heat of the Sun that is harnessed using a range of constantly evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaic energy, solar thermal, solar architecture, molten salt power plants and Artificial photosynthesis. It is an important source of renewable energy and its technologies are generally characterized as passive solar or active solar depending on how to capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar energy. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic systems, concentrated solar energy and solar water heating to harness energy. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favourable thermal properties or properties of light scattering, and design spaces that naturally circulate the air.
The sheer magnitude of available solar energy makes it a very attractive source of electricity.
