Equivalent Circuit Parameters of Induction Motors

Summary
This lab provides the student with a practical application of an induction motor. Beforehand, the students should be aware of the basic concepts of an induction motor. The student is required to follow an informative LabVIEW test. In the step-through test, Induction Motor Experiment.vi, the student will learn about two main applications of an induction motor (Blocked-Rotor, and No-Load) through theory and tests. The aim of this experiment is to identify the equivalent circuit parameters of a three-phase asynchronous machine and perform analysis based upon the variable input and motor parameters.
Uses
This experiment applies to a power electronics course or any discipline that deals with induction motors. Specifically it applies to electrical/electronic engineering.
Note: This experiment assumes that the simulation is used. The LabVIEW VI(s), Lab Procedure and Workstation Details would have to be changed to implement the real-time variation. Due to the risk involved in working with high voltage and the fact that your setup for this experiment may differ from the setup provided, a complete experiment for the real-time implementation was not provided. Experience in working with this type of system is suggested to eliminate “trial and error” mistakes in the setup.


Student’s Portion

Introduction
The aim of this experiment is to identify the equivalent circuit parameters of a three-phase asynchronous machine and perform analysis based upon the variable input and motor parameters.

Objective
• Understand how the equivalent circuit parameters of a three-phase induction motor are determined.
• Study the behaviour of the motor and the motor characteristics under sinusoidal steady-state operation, including the torque-speed characteristics at different supply frequencies and supply voltages.

Theory
Due to limited space and very well known theory about three-phase asynchronous machines, the theory of these motors will not be repeated here. It is expected that you obtain the basic knowledge from textbooks or other resources prior to performing this experiment.
