Conserving energy means reducing the amount of energy that is used for different purposes. This practice can result in increased financial capital, environmental value, national security, and personal and human comfort. Individuals and organizations that are direct consumers of energy may want to save energy to reduce energy costs and promote economic, political and environmental sustainability. Industrial and commercial users may want to increase efficiency and thus maximize profits.

On a larger scale, energy conservation is an important element of energy policy. In general, energy conservation reduces energy consumption and per capita energy demand. This reduces the increase in energy costs, and can reduce the need for new power plants, and energy imports. Reduced energy demand can provide more flexibility in choosing the most preferred energy production methods.

By reducing emissions, conserving energy is an important method to prevent climate change. Conservation of energy facilitates the substitution of non-renewable resources for renewable energy. Conservation of energy is often the most economical solution to energy shortages.

Some countries use energy or carbon taxes to motivate energy users to reduce their consumption. Carbon taxes can allow consumption to shift to nuclear power and other alternatives that carry a different set of environmental effects and constraints. Meanwhile, taxes on all energy consumption can reduce overall energy use, while reducing a wider range of environmental consequences from energy production. The State of California employs a differentiated energy tax by which each consumer receives a basic energy allocation that has a low tax. As usage rises above that baseline, the tax is increasing dramatically. These programs aim to protect the poorest households, while creating a higher tax burden for high energy consumers.
