Abstract

Oil in water (OW) emulsions were prepared by emulsifying the membrane (ME) on a large scale with a submerged stirrer cells using flat membranes, and a tubular cross-flow block. comparing the results obtained using flat or tubular membranes devices. Conventional ceramic micro filtration (MF) membrane (ZrO2 supported on TiO2), was used in both cases. The main advantage of these membranes is their low cost compared to other commonly used in the ME (SPG membranes) that involves reduction to 60%. The effect of operating parameters on the droplet size distributions in order to understand the mechanism of formation of droplets which takes place in both devices. Mono-dispersed O / W emulsion were obtained using flat membranes with relation to droplet-pore-diameter (Dd / Dp) in the range 2.1-2.9. The scatter values ​​of 0.58, 0.66 and 0.81 correspond to the membrane pore diameters of 0.45, 0.80 and 1.4 microns, respectively, as the proportion of active pores in the range of 27-36%. Apparatus tubular cross flow allowing for the production of mono disperse O / W emulsions, but with larger droplet size, droplet diameter having a ratio-to-pore (Dd / Dp) in the range 3.9-4.7. There was a significant effect on the activation of pore pressure disperse phase droplet size distribution.Shear stress has little effect on the droplet size, on both flat and tubular membranes. This suggested that the droplet formation mechanism is based on the shear stress. The mechanism of spontaneous emulsification.
