Recognition of emotion is the process of identifying human emotion, typically facial expressions. This is something that humans do automatically, but computational methodologies have also been developed. Humans show universal consistency in recognizing emotions, but they also show great variability among people in their abilities. This has been an important subject of study in psychology.
This process takes advantage of multi-area techniques such as signal processing, machine learning and computer vision. Computers use different methods to interpret emotion as Bayesian networks. Programmers often use Paul Ekman's facial action coding system as a guide.
