Embedded Systems Design
This course on systems first embedded students to the fundamental requirements of embedded systems and the interaction between hardware and software in such systems. The course will then discuss some basic hardware design steps, introduce students to ASIPs, ASICs, and FPGAs. Next, students will be exposed to the very important issue of designing for a lower energy consumption and presenting the techniques that are adopted for this purpose. Since many of the embedded systems will have real-time constraints, the basic problems of operating systems in real time will be discussed. This will be followed by formal specification models and languages, mapping the specification to the hardware and software components together with the decisions about the design and partitioning commitments of the hardware software. Next, we will present the synthesis of hardware and software along with some of the optimization techniques. The course will conclude with a brief description of the design verification methods that are adopted for the design of embedded systems.
