Abstract

The present report describes the steps and procedures necessary to achieve successful project on zero human intervention for motor control or Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC). Topics covered include an overview of the complete digital engine control, FADEC is the role in the performance of aircraft engines?

How it operates and controls the motor by means of a computer, its security features. Its application or use, advantages, disadvantages, technical problems and approach are also discussed.

The report includes sector partnerships with companies or the government, as well as the current research project. The report also presents a brief history of fuel control, some of the tasks required for a successful system FADEC, a description of some hardware changes to achieve these objectives, as well as an overview of some of the performance and protection provided.

Turbine engines provide the driving force for a significant percentage of modern transport systems, and is particularly important as an engine for a wide range of aircraft. Although often regarded as a mature technology, a significant amount of resources are spent on the improvement of these systems due to the large impact they have on society.

NASA program in the major aeronautics describes one of these research efforts and aims to reduce emissions, fuel consumption and noise levels. Separately, the Department Versatile Affordable Advanced Defense turbine engines (VAATE) The program describes the similar objectives for the reduction of fuel combustion with possibly more emphasis on the overall performance and reduce costs. Many key technologies involved in the implementation of these improvements, however, many of them are only included or to reach full potential through the use of the control support for technology transfer.

FADEC - Full Authority Digital Engine Control:
The newest version of the control jet fuel called FADEC - Full Authority Digital Electronic Control. The original fuel control in the early jet engines late 1940s and early 1950s were just built and looked like a general shut-off valve is connected to the throttle lever, Engines and regulators have become more sophisticated through the 1950s and 1960s, higher productivity , greater reliability, and increased security has become a driving force behind the new electronic fuel control system will be more intelligent, or rather, more accurate and more reliable than today, fuel controls, and they will be with us for many years.

Full Authority Digital Engine Control Systems (the FADEC) is a system composed of a digital computer, called an electronic engine controller (EEC) and the engine control unit (EEU), and accessories associated with it, which control all aspects of aircraft engines. FADECs were produced for both piston engines and jet engines.

FADEC is a system composed of a digital computer and auxiliary components that control the engine and propeller aircraft. First used in aircraft turbine engines, and is also referred to as the full power of the digital electronic control, these sophisticated control systems are increasingly being used in piston-powered air craft.

In a piston engine spark plugs FADEC uses speed, temperature and pressure sensors to monitor the status of each cylinder. The digital computer calculates the ideal impulse for each injector and controls the ignition timing as required for optimum performance. The FADEC compression ignition engine works similar to and performs all the same functions, except those that are specifically related to the process of spark ignition.

spark ignition engine reciprocates

FADEC system eliminates the need for magnetos, carburetor heat control mixture and initiating engine. A throttle lever is typical of an aircraft equipped with a FADEC system. The pilot simply positions the throttle lever to the desired retainer, such as starting, idling, cruise power or the maximum power and FADEC system regulates engine and propeller automatically for the selected mode. There is no need for the pilot to monitor or control the air / fuel mixture.

During start-up aircraft, FADEC primes cylinders, regulates the mixture and throttle positions depending on the engine temperature and ambient pressure. During cruising, the engine FADEC continuously monitors and adjusts the fuel supply and ignition timing for each cylinder individually. This precise control of the combustion process often leads to reduced fuel consumption and increased horsepower.

FADEC systems are considered an integral part of the engine management system and a propeller, and can be powered by the main electrical system of the aircraft. In many aircraft FADEC is powered by a separate generator connected to the engine. In any case, there should be a backup power supply available as FADEC system failure can lead to complete loss of thrust. In order to prevent loss of traction, two separate and identical digital circuits are included for redundancy, each channel capable of providing all the functions of the engine and the propeller without limitation.

The engine control unit

The engine control unit (ECU), is a type of electronic control unit, which controls the number of drives in an internal combustion engine for optimum speed. It does this by reading the values of a plurality of sensors inside the engine compartment, the interpretation of multidimensional data using performance cards (so-called look-up tables), and adjusting the drive motor, respectively.

Before the computer, the air / fuel mixture, the ignition timing and the idling speed is established mechanically and dynamically controlled by mechanical and pneumatic means. One of the earliest attempts to use a standardized and automated device to control multiple functions of the engine control at the same time was "Kommandogerät", created by BMW in 1939, over 801 14-cylinder radial engine aircraft.

Digital Engine Control Systems

Enigine requires spark ignition spark to initiate combustion in the combustion chamber. ECU can adjust the precise timing spark (called ignition timing) to provide better power and economy. If the ECU detects knock, a condition that is potentially destructive to the engine, and "judges" to be the result of ignition timing being too early during the compression stroke, it will delay (retard) the timing of the spark, to prevent it, so as the sound tends to occur more easily at low speeds, the computer control automatic transmission is often reduced to a lower gear as the first attempt to mitigate the knock.
