The EEG is a recording of the electrical activity of the brain, in most cases made of electrodes on the surface of the scalp. It can also be made from electrodes placed directly on the surface of the brain or from needle electrodes inserted into the brain. Recordings are the sum of volume-conducting fields produced by millions of interconnecting neurons. The neuronal components that produce the currents are the dendrites, the axons and the cellular bodies. The architecture of the brain is not uniform, but varies with different locations.

Therefore, the EEG may vary depending on the location of the recording electrodes. Sensory information is transmitted to the brain via frequency-modulated trains of action potentials that cause neuronal activity in particular regions of the brain depending on the type of sensory information and the stimulus site in the body. Similarly the decision to initiate a movement, in response to sensory information, arises in several parts of the brain, depending on the type of movement and its location in the body, and gives rise to electrical activity at the corresponding sites.
