Mobile Evolution
Till now there are mainly 4 generations observed in mobile technology.
These are 1G, 2G, 2.5G and 3G.
1G came as Advanced mobile system in 1983.
2G was introduced in 1998 in U.S.A.
3G was introduced in late 2008.
4G is still in development stage.
Edge technology
EDGE is a high speed mobile data standard.
Uses TDMA and follows GSM.
Transmits data at up to 384 kbits per second.
Builds on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) air interface and networks
Channel coding
Uses Gaussian minimum-shift keying (GMSK).
Also uses higher-order phase shift keying (8PSK) for the upper five of its nine modulation and coding schemes.
EDGE produces a 3-bit word for every change in carrier phase.
Major Applications
EDGE enables operators to introduce 3G data applications into existing GSM networks.
It enables:-
Mobile Internet access
Mobile Office
Electronic banking
Electronic cash
Electronic payment
