Introduction
Eco-Refrigeration refers to the refrigeration in which the refrigeration system employs Eco-friendly refrigerants
Eco-friendly refrigerants cause no environmental harm like Ozone layer depletion and Global warming
By Montreal Protocol (1987),the use of CFCs and other Ozone depleting substances are banned
Hydrocarbon fluids are eco-friendly refrigerants which can replace non eco-friendly refrigerants
The use of new refrigerants should be such that there is no compromise in the performance ,safety and reliability
CFCs as Refrigerants
Non toxic
Non-flammable (safe)
Higher cost of non CFC refrigerants
Hence CFCs are used extensively as refrigerants in refrigeration units, aerosol propellants, electronic cleaning solvents, and blowing agents
CFCs in to the Environment
While manufacturing
Running
Servicing
As this CFC causes no immediate harm, they are expelled to the environment with least care
Depletion of ozone layer
CFCs released to air
Winds carry them in to the stratosphere
UV-B and UV-C radiation from the sun releases their chlorine atoms
Complex chemical reactions result in formation of chlorine monoxide
Chlorine monoxide react with ozone molecule to form oxygen and regenerates more chlorine atoms which involves in further depletion
Each chlorine atom can destroy as many as 100,000 ozone molecules over 100 years
Challenges to HC revolution
Scientific and economic hurdles
Cost
Need of well known technology (refrigeration cycles)
Lack of sophistication
Lack skill in servicing sector
Safety (as HCs are flammable)
Choosing the correct substitute
