Distributed computing is an introduction to the basic concepts and principles of distributed programming. It takes a "how-to" approach where students learn by doing. Designed for students who are familiar with Java, the book covers programming paradigms, protocols and interfaces (API) applications, including RMI, COBRA, IDL, WWW, and SOAP. Each chapter represents a paradigm and / or protocol, and then is the use of DPI, which illustrates the concept. The presentation uses the narrative, code examples and diagrams are intended to explain in a way that is clear and concise. End-of-chapter exercises provide an analytical and practical exercises to encourage the reader to practice the concepts and use of the API-interfaces covered throughout the text. Using this text, students will understand and be able to perform basic distributed programming techniques used to create the network services and network applications, including Internet applications.Grid computing, one of the most sold computer theories, is a computational technique in which the problem together among the collections of interconnected, independent computers. World Wide Web, remote procedure call (RPC), Java Remote Method Invocation (Java RMI) and collaboration applications such as mobile agent system are some common examples of distributed computing. With the recent growth in net based applications, it is necessary to equip the graduate students the necessary knowledge to participate in and comply with such requirements.

As the author suggested in the introduction, the purpose of Distributed Computing: Principles and Applications is to introduce students to different paradigms of distributed computing, as well as provide examples of programming to enhance the themes within each paradigm. The book consists of two main parts: chapter 1 to chapter 3 teaches readers about the basic concepts and different paradigms of distributed computing; the remaining 9 chapters each paradigm explains further detail and cleanses through code examples. At the end of each chapter, the author provides a summary of the relevant actors as well as a series of exercises problems. Relevant links are also provided to direct interested readers to further resources. In the first part of the book (chapter 1, 2 and 3), the author first defines grid computing, and then presents the principles of distributed computing with different points of view, including the operating system, network, and software. In order to ensure that readers fully understand the communication mechanism of distributed computing, the author discusses the relationship between the processes of care. The first end portion of the classification of different paradigms distributed application with respect to their level of abstraction. Trade-offs between the different levels of abstraction are also discussed to educate readers on some of the issues that must be considered when selecting an appropriate paradigm.

The second part of the book (chapter 12 4c) provides an in-depth discussion of each paradigm. Examples and sample codes are used to help illustrate the communication mechanism of each paradigm in each chapter. Chapter 4 shows a distributed computing using the sockets API, the lowest level of abstraction, and illustrates this with both datagram and stream mode jacks socket Java-API interfaces. Built on top of the socket API, the client-server paradigm is the most common approach is implemented in network environments. Internet is one such example; and Chapter 9 and 11 specifies the different applications that exist on the Internet. Chapter 6 discusses the group communication involving multicast mechanisms. The author then focuses on distributed objects in Chapter 7, 8 and 10, where it covers the Remote Procedure Call (RPC), remote method invocation (RMI), Common Object Request Broker Architecture (COBRA) and Java Interface Definition Language (IDL), Finally, The book ends with an overview of current advanced distributed computing areas including the message Queuing system, mobile agents, network services, object spaces and collaborative computing.

Overall, this book is more informative than a practical nature, in that it tries to cover a lot of major distributed computing techniques without carefully explaining everything to ensure that the concept can be captured by the students. Although there are examples in most code chapters are intended for purposes of illustration and lack challenge. Exercises at the end of each chapter, are reasonable, but may include more complex issues, to encourage students to seek additional knowledge required outside of the book. Links are adequate and can be improved with more recent studies. It may also be good to introduce a well-known distributed computing projects such as BOINC for students. Despite some grammatical imperfections, the book itself does provide an excellent introduction to materials for students with little or none knowledge of distributed computing.
