Now a days mobile phone has become a part of our daily lives. Due to the low cost of mobile phones, mobile phones are widely used for home automation. This article proposes a system of home appliances controlled by remote control. It is a system based on DTMF (dual tone multifrequency) consisting of two mobile phones, a DTMF decoder and an ATmega8 microcontroller. A mobile phone is used as a remote control that can locate a long distance from the house and another mobile phone is in the house that acts as a receiver. The control information is sent via the remote mobile phone as a DTMF tone, this DTMF tone is received by the home mobile phone, the received DTMF tone is decoded by the DTMF decoder MT8870 IC. The logic output signal from the decoder is used as input to the ATmea8 microcontroller. The ATmega8 microcontroller is previously programmed to control household appliances according to the output of the DTMF decoder.

Generally, appliances used in our home are controlled with the help of switches. These days, you can see many technologies used in home automation projects. His article presents the control of the appliances through the DTMF technology.


DTMF is the acronym for Dual Tone Multi Frequency. So, just think when you make the call for customer care, you will be asked to press 1, 2 or any other number. When you press a number on your mobile, a particular action is happening. All this is due to DTMF. When you press a button on your mobile keyboard, it will generate a two-frequency tone. These tones are called row and column frequencies.

Generally, row frequencies are low frequencies and column frequencies are high frequencies. These frequencies for DTMF are chosen in such a way that they do not have a harmonic relation with the others, so that they do not produce the same tones. The frequencies of the columns are slightly higher than the row frequencies to compensate for the high frequency offset of the voice audio systems.
