An oil well is a boring one on Earth that is designed to bring petroleum-bearing oil to the surface. Usually, some natural gas is produced along with the oil. A well that is designed to produce primarily or only gas can be called a gas well.
Drilling
The well is created by drilling a hole of 12 cm to 1 meter in diameter on the ground with a drilling rig that rotates a drill string with a little attached. After drilling the hole, sections of steel pipe (casing), slightly smaller in diameter than the drill hole, are placed in the hole. The cement can be placed between the outside of the housing and the hole known as the ring. The housing provides structural integrity to the newly drilled well drill, as well as isolating potentially dangerous high pressure zones from each other and from the surface.
With these safely insulated areas and the formation protected by the casing, the well can be drilled deeper (in potentially more unstable and violent formations) with a smaller bit, and also covered with a smaller sized casing. Modern wells often have two to five sets of smaller hole sizes, drilled into each, each cemented with a casing.
Drill the well
• The bit, aided by the weight of thick-walled pipes called "drill collars" above it, cuts into the rock. There are different types of drill; Some cause the rock to disintegrate due to compression failure, while others cut the slices of the rock as the bit rotates.
• The drilling fluid, a.k.a. "Mud" is pumped through the inside of the drill pipe and out through the drill. The main components of the drilling fluid are usually water and clay, but it also contains a complex mixture of fluids, solids and chemicals that must be carefully designed to provide the physical and chemical characteristics needed to drill the well safely. The particular functions of drilling mud include cooling the drill bit, raising the rocks to the surface, preventing rock destabilization in the well walls and overcoming the pressure of the fluids inside the rock so that these fluids do not enter the well . Some oil wells are drilled with air or foam as the drilling fluid.
• Generated rock "cuts" are swept by the drilling fluid as it flows back to the surface out of the drill pipe. The fluid passes through "shakers", which stretch the cuts of good fluid that is returned to the pit. Observing the anomalies in the return cuts and monitoring the well volume or rate of return of the fluid are essential to catch "kicks" early. A "kick" is when the formation pressure at the drill depth is more than the hydrostatic head of the sludge above, if it is not temporarily controlled by closing the shutters and finally increasing the density of the drilling fluid would allow formation fluids And the mud to climb through the ring without control.
• The drill pipe or drill string to which the drill is attached gradually lengthens as the well is drilled by screwing other 9 m (30 ft) lengths or "joints" of the pipe under the kelly or topdrive on the surface . This process is called making a connection, or "firing". Joints can be combined for more efficient firing when the hole is drawn by creating multi-joint supports. A conventional triple, for example, would pull the pipe from the hole three joints at a time and stack them in the tower. Many modern platforms, called "super singles", travel tube one at a time, placing it in racks as they go.
This process is facilitated by a drilling rig containing all the necessary equipment to circulate the drilling fluid, lift and rotate the pipe, control the bottom of the well, eliminate drilling fluid cuts, and generate on-site power for these operations.
