Radio frequency engineering is a subset of electrical engineering that deals with devices that are designed to operate on the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. These devices operate within the range of approximately 3 kHz to 300 GHz.

Radio frequency engineering is embedded in almost everything that transmits or receives a radio wave, which includes, but is not limited to, mobile phones, radios, Wi-Fi and two-way radios.

Radio frequency engineering is a highly specialized field that typically falls into one of two areas:

1. provide or control the coverage with some type of antenna / transmission system

2. Generate or receive signals to or from said transmission system to other electronic communications or control systems.

In order to produce quality results, a thorough knowledge of mathematics, physics, general theory of electronics as well as specialized training in areas such as wave propagation, impedance transformations, filters, microstrip circuit board design, etc. may be required. Due to the many ways in which RF is performed both through typical conductors and across space, an initial design of an RF circuit usually bears very little resemblance to the final optimized physical circuit. Design revisions are often required to achieve the desired results.
