The management of human resources (HRM or HR) is the management of human resources. It is commonly known as the Human Resources Department to maximize the performance of employees serving the strategic objectives of an employer. Initially, it was dominated by transactional work, such as payroll and profit management, but due to globalization, consolidation of companies, technological advances and additional research, HR from 2015 focuses on strategic initiatives such as mergers and acquisitions, talent management, succession planning, industrial and labor relations, and diversity and inclusion.

Human resources focus on maximizing employee productivity. Human resources professionals manage the human capital of an organization and focus on implementing policies and processes. They can specialize in recruitment, training, labor relations or benefits. Recruitment specialists find and hire the best talent. Training and development professionals ensure that employees are trained and have continuous development. This is done through training programs, performance evaluations and reward programs. Employee relationships address employee concerns when policies are violated, such as in cases of harassment or discrimination. Someone in benefits develops compensation structures, family leave programs, discounts and other benefits that employees can obtain. On the other side of the field are human resources generalists or business partners. These human resources professionals could work in all areas or be representatives of labor relations that work with unionized employees.

In newly created companies, trained professionals can perform human resources tasks. In larger companies, a full functional group is usually dedicated to discipline, with personnel specialized in various human resources tasks and a functional leadership that participates in making strategic decisions throughout the company. To train professionals in the profession, higher education institutions, professional associations and companies have established study programs explicitly dedicated to the duties of the function. Academic and professional organizations can produce field-specific publications. HR is also a field of research study that is popular in the fields of management and industrial / organizational psychology, with research articles appearing in a series of academic journals, including those mentioned later in this article.

Some companies globalise and form more diverse teams. The human resources departments have the function of making sure that these teams can work and that people can communicate between cultures and between countries. Due to changes in the trade, the current issues in human resources include diversity and inclusion, as well as the use of technology to advance the participation of employees. In today's global work environment, most companies focus on reducing employee turnover and retaining the talent and knowledge their employees possess. New hires not only involve a high cost, but also increase the risk that a newcomer can not replace the person who previously worked in a position. Human resources departments strive to offer benefits that will attract workers, thus reducing the risk of losing corporate knowledge.
