In mathematics graph theory is the study of graphs, which are mathematical structures used to model relationships between pairs between objects. A graph in this context is composed of vertices, nodes or points that are connected by edges, arcs or lines. A graph may not be directed, which means that there is no distinction between the two vertices associated with each edge, or its edges can be directed from one vertex to another; see Graph (discrete mathematics) for more detailed definitions and for other variations in chart types that are commonly considered. Graphs are one of the main objects of study in discrete mathematics.

Charts can be used to model many types of relationships and processes in physical, biological, social, and information systems. Many practical problems can be represented by graphs. Emphasizing its application to real-world systems, the term network is sometimes defined as a graph in which attributes (eg, names) are associated with nodes and / or edges.

In computer science, graphics are used to represent communication networks, data organization, computational devices, computer flow, etc. For example, the link structure of a website can be represented by a directed graphic, in which the vertices represent web pages and the directed edges represent links from one page to another. A similar approach can be taken to problems in social media, travel, biology, computer chip design, and many other fields. The development of algorithms to handle graphics is therefore of greater interest in computing. The transformation of graphics is often formalised and represented by graphical rewrite systems. Complementary to chart transformation systems that focus on rule-based chart manipulation in memory are graphical databases oriented towards persistent and secure storage and query of graphically structured data transactions.
