Industrial engineering (IE), often also called Industrial Engineering & Management, or simply Engineering & Management, teaches students about the design, planning and optimization of production and manufacturing processes. It is a study that integrates methods and techniques from the engineering as well as management science.

As there exists no general definition of what IE really is, IE study programmes can differ a lot, especially from country to country. While in Germany, IE studies resemble more or less a mix of mechanical engineering and management and have a strong technical focus and also contain physics courses, Finnish IE programmes have a stronger focus on management and are slightly less technical.

In the Netherlands, on the other hand, IE programmes are rather similar to German programmes, but don’t include any physics courses that are typical for mechanical engineering. As you can see, agreeing on a definition for IE seems rather difficult. What all those different programmes have in common, however, is the fact that they consist of a mix of engineering and management courses, and this makes IE rather unique compared to other studies.

Typical courses in IE are production and operations planning, supply chain management, logistics, operations research, finance and accounting and materials handling. While courses such as supply chain management are also usually taught in business programmes, as an Industrial Engineer, you try to solve problems by using scientific management techniques AND mathematical concepts. In this way, you can optimize processes by means of reducing costs, increasing efficiency and productivity, or improving quality.
