AMOLED is a display technology used in smartwatches, mobile devices, laptops and televisions. OLED describes a specific type of thin film screen technology in which organic compounds form the electro-luminescent material, and the active matrix refers to the technology behind pixel addressing. As of 2008, AMOLED technology was used in mobile phones, media players and digital cameras and continued to move towards low-cost, large-size applications (eg, 40 inches or 100 centimeters).
An AMOLED screen consists of an active array of OLED pixels that generate light (luminescence) after electrical activation that have been deposited or integrated into a matrix of thin-film transistors (TFT), which functions as a series of switches to control the current which flows to each individual pixels.
Typically, this DC flow is controlled by at least two TFTs in each pixel (to trigger luminescence), with a TFT to start and stop the load of one storage capacitor and the second to provide a source of voltage to the required level to create a constant current to the pixel, thus eliminating the need for the very high currents required for passive matrix OLED operation.
TFT is crucial in the manufacture of AMOLED screens. In AMOLEDs, the two primary TFT bottom-plane technologies, polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) and amorphous silicon (a-Si) are currently used which offer the potential to directly manufacture active matrix backplanes at low temperatures (below 150 ° C) on flexible plastic supports for the production of flexible AMOLED screens.
