To overcome the energy crisis of today, energy industries can implement advanced technology like floating solar chimney technology (FSCT). FSCT is quite sustainable and the most abundant renewable energy source available compared to other renewable energy sources. This technique uses a greenhouse to trap solar energy from the sun. The objective of this work is to explore the feasibility, operating principle, power generation capacity and the past scenario behind this concept of power generation. This document also suggests methodology for overcoming problems. FSCT can be installed in arid, semi-arid and even grassland areas to generate energy. Therefore, this technology would be a boon to the energy crisis.
The basic model of this structure was first built in 1982 and successfully tested for 6 years, in Spain by Professor J. Schlaich. It was a small prototype with 50 kW power generation technology. Even with FSC structures of moderate height of 650m, it is possible that the direct cost of production is approximately 45 USD / MWh. Fsc technology is a promising technology that is appropriate for areas such as desert and dry regions where other technologies are not suitable due to high unfavorable local costs and conditions. This technology is a fabric structure that can be raised locally and manufactured anywhere. The daily energy generated by the use of this technology in desert areas will be proportional to the daily horizontal solar irradiation in that area.
