INTRODUCTION TO HYDRO POWER:

• Power is the most important and essential input for economic development of any country.

• Among the sources of power namely -hydroelectric, thermal and nuclear etc. the hydroelectric power is the most important and essential ,since it is renewable, pollution free and also low generation cost.


• In Hydroelectric power electricity in generated by hydropower, i.e., the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water.

• It is the most widely used form of renewable energy. Once a hydroelectric complex is constructed, the project produces no direct waste, and has a considerably lower output level of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) than the fossil fuel powered energy plants.


• The total hydroelectric potential in country has been estimated at 75,000 MW at 60% load factor, in a review by C.E.A. (central electrical authority).

• Existing projects in country accounts only for 12,000 MW.


• Two large blocks of potential are located in North Western and in the North Eastern region in country.

• For the system planning and operation, the country has been divided into five regions.


• The contribution of Northern region is order of the 19% with installed capacity of 4840 MW.
