Skinput is a new skin-based interface that allows users to use their own arms and hands as touch screens by detecting different low frequency sounds that are generated by hitting various parts of the skin. This technology is the collaboration between Desney Tan and Dan Morris at Microsoft's research lab in Redmond, Washington and Chris Harrison at Carnegie Mellon University. Researchers have shown that Skinput allows users to simply touch their skin to play games, make phone calls, control audio devices and navigate through systems.

In this technology, a menu, keyboard or any other graphic extends to the forearm and the palm of the user's hand from a projector that is embedded in a bracelet. This band has an acoustic detector, which decides the part of the screen that must be activated by touch. The scientists explain that changes in bone density, mass and size along with the filtering effects of joints and soft tissues mean that several skin spots are acoustically discrete. The software goes with the sound frequencies to specific points of the skin, which allows the system to decide the skin button pressed by the user. Next, the prototype system uses a wireless technology such as Bluetooth to send the commands to the device that is controlled (for example, iPod, phone or computer).
