A voice browser is a software application that presents an interactive voice user interface for the user in a manner analogous to the operation of a web browser that interprets the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Dialog documents interpreted by the voice browser are often encoded in standards-based markup languages, such as the Voice Dialog Extendable Markup Language (VoiceXML), a standard of the World Wide Web Consortium. A voice finder presents information aurally, using playback of pre-recorded audio files or text-to-speech synthesis software. A voice finder obtains information using speech recognition and keyboard input, such as DTMF detection.

As speech recognition and web technologies have matured, voice applications are commercially deployed in many industries and voice browsers supplant traditional interactive voice response (IVR) systems. Voice browser software is delivered in a variety of deployment models. Systems that present a voice search engine to a user usually provide interfaces to the public switched telephone network or to a private exchange.

Voice navigation refers to the use of speech to navigate through an application. These applications are written using parts of the Voice Interface Framework. In the same way that web applications are written in HTML and represented in a web browser, voice applications are written in VoiceXML and processed through a voice search.

Real-world voice-driven web applications abound, although people do not always realize that they are interacting with a web service; Examples include airline departure and arrival information, banking transactions, automatic telephone appointment reminders, and automated telephone receptionists. According to one estimate, more than 85% of the interactive voice response (IVR) applications for telephones (including the mobile) use the VoiceXML standard of the W3C.
