distribution automation

distribution automation is a type of intelligent control over electrical power grid functions to the distribution level . The electrical power grid is typically separated into transmission systems and distribution systems. Electric power transmission systems operate above 110kV, whereas Electricity distribution systems operate at lower voltages. Normally, electric utilities with SCADA systems have extensive control over transmission-level equipment, and good control over distribution-level equipment. But Often unable to control smaller entities such as Distributed energy resources (DERs), buildings, and homes .Distributed generation is increasingly important in power grids around the world. This generation can help to support local power grids in the presence of blackouts, and ease the load on long-distance transmission lines

The main motivation of distribution automation is to use evolving computer and communications technology to improve operating performance of distribution systems. By the 1990s the technology had matured and that resulted in several large and many small projects at various utilities. Many utilities found it difficult to justify distribution automation based on hard cost-benefit numbers. Business uncertainties due to deregulation and restructuring of the power industry slowed implementation of distribution automation. Now, there is renewed interest in distribution automation due to emergence of new technologies, specifically new measuring devices and sensors, more powerful and refined communication equipment, highly advanced computing equipment, advanced power electronics equipment, and new control and protection ideas.

Distribution Automation
The IEEE defines the distribution automation systems as "systems that enable an electric utility to monitor, coordinate, and operate distribution components in a real-time mode from remote locations. "
The Electricity Utilities are competing to find the ways to improve their levels of service and also to reduce the cost of operation. Facilities to provide automated responses to faults , providing remote control to their Distribution Network etc are some of the methods. A D i s t r i b u t i o n Automation(D A ) System e n h a n c e s t h e efficiency and productivity of a utility.market advantages and improved public image are some other benefits. The DA system is modular and the various modules may consist of remote monitoring and control of substation, feeder and consumer devices, and loads.

BENEFITS OF DI!STRIBUTION AUTOMATION
the expected benefits from the DA system must be identified and quantified to the practical extent. Some of the benefits include:
-Enhanced system efficiency and consumer satisfaction
-Improved outage response and restoration
-Deferred capital expenditures etc
